Marlin Hotel, Dublin

Client: Marlin Hotels

Status: Completed 2019

Value: €40m

Project Description:

The accumulation of several small land parcels into a larger wedge-shaped site in the heart of Dublin city provided an ideal opportunity to develop a new contemporary style hotel with 300 bedrooms.

The entrance to the hotel has been located at the ‘point’ of the wedge thus activating the street scape at this junction and inviting guests to enter and enjoy the facilities provided by the hotel. These include extensive bar and restaurant areas, along with meeting rooms available for use by hotel guests and the public. There is also an external courtyard to the rear providing an outdoor dining option for guests.

On the upper levels the hotel rooms have been arranged in a loop around a central landscaped atrium. The bedrooms are accessed from either side of the corridors in order to minimise circulation and maximise the efficiency of the typical floor plate. A glazed wall along one side of the atrium provides natural daylight onto the circulation route and views into the landscaped courtyard.

The standard bedrooms have been designed in a compact modern style in order to maximise the number of rooms and provide a fresh experience for the users. A number of executive suites are provided on the upper levels with 20% of the rooms interconnected in order to provide a good flexible mix of rooms for business and leisure guests.

The hotel façade has been treated in a clean contemporary style. The glass and aluminium curtain walling is integrated with horizontal and vertical fins which provide interest and added privacy to the bedrooms, while at the same time reducing the cooling load on the building by providing solar shading along the façades. The top two levels of the building are set back and fully glazed in order to reduce impact on the surrounding areas and in particular the protected structures along Aungier Street. A stone cladding is used to group sections of the building façade together which, along with the set -back upper levels, help to reduce the scale and bulk of the building.
