This year, on behalf of Marlin Apartments Ltd., Cantrell and Crowley Architects will oversee the refurbishment and extension to No.’s 22-24 Aungier Street, Dublin 2 (protected structures, dating from the mid seventeenth century). The project, granted permission by An Bord Pleanala in May 2019, will re energise 3 historically significant and quite different building types.

The carefully considered scheme, will include the provision of a bar/restaurant at the ground floor of Nos. 23 and 24 Aungier Street (through the addition of a contemporary extension to the rear) and a retail unit/café at the ground floor of No. 22 Aungier Street.

Above these ground floor units, the upper floors of Nos. 22-24 Aungier Street will accommodate 20 hotel bedrooms, all designed to preserve and compliment the surviving historical fabric and layout. Bedrooms will be accessed via 3 individual entrances from Aungier Street, which retain many of the original features and staircases.

The works will include the delicate restoration of the brick/rendered building facades, external fenestration and timber shopfronts, with all modern interventions being of a contemporary design which will add to the layered interest of the buildings. Once completed, the buildings will continue to contribute to Aungier Street’s wider historic urban landscape whilst contributing to the streets varying commercial activities.

Internal strip out works, to include removal of non-original/modern additions, will commence early March 2020. These works will be carefully carried out and will give the design team a detailed view into the condition and history of the old structures, and will be crucial to the interpretation of the history of the buildings and, in turn the Aungier Street area.
