Stratford Hotel, London
Cantrell & Crowley have been commissioned to design a 300+ bedroom hotel close to the Olympic Village in London. The site presented a number of challenges including underground transport tunnels, restricting the height of the building over the majority of the site. Our approach was to retain The Railway Tavern, a Victorian building dating from the late 1800’s located on the corner of Angel Lane and Windmill Lane. This provided an opportunity to wrap the hotel building around, and in doing so completing the street scape along both sides of the site frontage. The building respects the Victorian scale at the corner, rising from three storey to five storeys further along Angel Lane. The top level is fully glazed and set back to reduce impact, and towards the rear of the site, where the building footprint encroaches beyond the underground transport tunnels, additional levels bring the building to eight storey, thus maximising the accommodation and bedroom numbers. The facades design incorporates heritage brick, found frequently in use locally, along with a modern curtain walling system of flush glass and aluminium fins providing interest and increased privacy.
