Loreto Abbey Dalkey, Sports Hall Competition
One of the key challenges is to provide the large volume of accommodation required while at the same time creating a building which has a human scale and which does not appear too large and overbearing.
A design strategy has been adopted where the smaller volumes of accommodation are assembled around the larger sports hall. This has the effect of reducing the scale and appearance of the main hall.
The changing and administrative facilities are grouped in one block closest to the school and main entrance, while the fitness room and studio, which will benefit most from the available views, are grouped to the east of the main hall facing the sea. The entrance and circulation routes are also located to take advantage of the fantastic views.
